Bookcrossing in Malaysia!

I just read in Bibliobibuli that Bookcrossing now has its official zone in Malaysia! It's at groundfloor 1Utama. MPH is sponsoring 50 free books a month, but for the scheme to be successful all booklovers have to play their parts.

This photo is from bibliobibuli...

Malaysia is still taking its babysteps but I hope we'll be running soon! (errr..the journey is to make Malaysians read more / love books more- dan yang sewaktu dgnnya)

Complete Trust In The Public

This is about the latest pandemic, Swine Flu (H1N1 virus). Last week alone, the National Health Service (NHS) reported 100,000 new cases in UK. 63 now are critically ill in ICU.

Yesterday, the government here launched a new website- National Pandemic Flu Service (I don't put the link here because I don't want to crowd the site- already 9 millions hits the first hour). In that website you can get latest news, and also if you are sick, you can take a questionnaire of symptoms. If your answers suggest that you are likely having the swine flu, you will get a unique code that you can bring to a pharmacy and you can get the antiviral, Tamiflu (Oseltamivir).

Now that antiviral is very2 expensive, costing around £65 per person.

This is the first time in the world that you can get a prescription through an online questionnaire, bypassing medical personnel.

A lot of controversies and debates yesterday in the news- irresponsible people might get the antiviral and try to sell it at ebay (though you can only get 1 prescription with one valid ID). Scared people might just lie in the questionnaire to get the drugs and protect themselves (though this will predispose you to side effects).

Pregnant ladies, children under 1 and those with existing medical illness still need to see their GP.

The govn representative said that they are putting complete trust on the public and hope everybody will be responsible in this crisis. They are trying to buy time before the vaccine is available (now already on clinical trial). They are also doing this to relieve burden on the GPs.

I say, it's worth a try. Time to unite and have trusts in each other.

p/s they say it's not to worry, but what they just did sounds like a desperate measure...hmmm..

Apa Dosa Anak Itu?

Kisah 1

ok... saya tau berita2 macam ni dah basi...tapi saya nak membebel jugak.

Nasib baik saya tak pernah diuji ketika bertugas macam ni.

Heii..otak letak kat mana? lutut?

Ini budakla..tak tengok ke mata bulat dia, pipi tembam dia? pastu jari dia yg tak sampai satu ruas jari kita? kaki dia yg kayuh2 bila dia nangis?

Duhhh... (tahhh..! kata Adam kalau dia geram)

Have some respect for life-lahh!

Kisah 2

Saya teringat pengalaman ketika bertugas di Hospital M semasa saya 'houseman'. Saya sedang bertugas di dewan bersalin. Kami menerima seorang pesakit Melayu 16 tahun yang mengalami pendarahan. Setelah diperiksa rupa2nya dia hampir bersalin.

Si ibu bertanya "apa dr cakap nih? anak saya mengandung?"

Adoiii...nak pengsan saya, sambil menyumpah2 specialist yg tak nampak btg hidung.

"Errr..errr..makcik tak tau ke? dah nak masuk 6 bulan dah..."

Saya tunjukkan bilik anak mereka. Si anak buat2 pejam mata. Si ibu memanggil2nya. Si ayah tak terkata apa, mungkin menahan marah. Saya terpaksa tinggalkan mereka sekejap, mengejarkan pesakit lain.

"dr...saya nak tengok cucu saya, cucu saya tak bersalah" kata si ibu.

What do you expect from a 16 year-old?

Kisah 3

Seorang gadis 18thn datang mengadu sakit perut, dia diteman ibunya. Rupa2nya sakit nak bersalin. Lagi sekali kes ibunya tak tau menahu (gadis ni gemuk sikit, berpakaian longgar, memang masa staf kaunter triage terima dia pun tak perasan dia mengandung).

Sekarang nak tanggung cucu pulak. Terduduk kitorang mengenang nasib bayi yg baru lahir itu. Tiada sambutan gembira. Tiada majlis kesyukuran. Tiada azan ditelinga laungan ayah yg bersyukur.

Hahh...bapaknya pun 18thn. Nak tau apa budak laki mentah ni buat? Dia terjah masuk ofis saya dan berkata ..

"Dr...saya nak ujian DNA"

Bab2 melepaskan diri ni pandai engkau ek...

Saya jawab "Apa awak ingat awak Anwar Ibrahim?"

OK, rujukan kpd Anwar Ibrahim ni takde kena mengena dgn peribadi Anwar Ibrahim, cuma masa tu tgh kecoh pasal kes Anwar di mahkamah, dan maksud saya pada budak itu ialah masalah engkau nih bukan masalah kerajaan Malaysia.

Saya katakan padanya kalau awak tak buat salah jgnla takut dgn desakan org kampung.

Nak tau apa budak tu jawab?

"Saya mengaku saya ada melakukan perbuatan terkutuk tu dgn dia tapi saya tahu saya bukanlah bapak bayi tu"

Tahhh!

Koma dan Ayat-Ayat Cinta

Sebenarnya saya kurang pasti apakah terjemahan Bahasa Malaysia untuk perkataan 'coma'. Ayat panjangnya ialah tidak sedarkan diri. Ia bukan pengsan sebab pengsan ialah 'faint'. Definisi bahasa Inggerisnya ialah 'profound state of unconsciousness'.

*kecederaan kepala (kemalangan jln raya, dipukul dsbg)
*ubat/dadah (spt anestesia yg diberikan kpd pesakit utk pembedahan)
*keracunan (spt pengambilan dos ubat berlebihan-biasanya pil tidur, karbon monoksida, dadah spt heroin, ganja etc dan racun2 lain.
*penyakit metabolik spt ketoasidosis diabetik, hipoglisemia.....

Saya ingatkan ceritanya macam 'Ada Apa Dgn Cinta', tapi ternyata bukan.

Scotland- Highland Folks Museum

We also visited the Highland Folks Museum in Aviemore. It is an open air museum, much like Mini Malaysia in Malacca. It has a reception area (cafe, toilets, gift shop and playground), 1930s folk village and 1700s folk settlement.

In the 1930s, they were mostly farmers. The museum build a school, house, post office, shop, barn and shepherd's house.

the school...

the shepherd's house (notice how small it is- the kitchen is next to his bed!)...

me and the shop lady...look at the 1930s tin biscuits..and the scale in front of her...

the vintage bus we took to go to the 1700s settlement (dah x larat nak jalan)

In the 1700s they lived in tribes, and every tribe has its own leader (who owns the biggest house). Other members of the tribes live around the leader's house, within stone walls that mark their territory.

The next day we checked out early and started our 8-hour journey home to Manchester. We drove south, this time via Glasgow..(so that Wanma can say to her friends.."den dah poie dah Glasgow..").

Alhamdulillah, we had a very memorable vacation in Scotland and came back in one piece.

Tired but happy boys....

Scotland- Loch Ness

The next day we went to Loch Ness, one of many lakes in Scottish Highlands. It is famous for its monster, nick named Nessie, which was first sighted in the 1930s.

This picture (from wikipedia) was taken in 1934. Later t was proved as hoax.

The legend has brought many people here. Many scientist tried to explain the presence of Nessie but now it is regarded as modern-day myth.

Nevertheless, Loch Ness is breathtakingly beautiful, a tiny piece of Heaven on the earth....

Scotland- Nairn

After sightseeing Edinburgh for a few hours, we continued our journey to north of Scotland.

If you look at the map (taken from www.geocities.com), from Edinburgh we drove to Nairn (not shown in map) which is situated roughly between Inverness and Elgin. It is the furthest north of this beautiful world that I've ever been to. I felt quite lucky because during our stay in Nairn, we experienced the summer solstice here (21st June-the longest day of the year for northern hemisphere). Even at 12 midnight, the sky was not dark (remang2 senja je). At 4am the sun was already out again.

Nairn is a small town situated at the coast of Moray Firth. It was a fishing village, now a holiday resort. Moray Firth is famous for dolphin watch, where you can hire small cruises to go to the sea and watch dolphins in the wildlife. But of course, we didn't have the money for that, although I would really love to.

We stayed in a caravan park called Nairn Lochloy Holiday Park. The park is by the seaside with direct access to the beach, and it has a playground, indoor swimming pool, restaurant and a video arcade.

The caravan's interior is small and compact, but all necessities were provided, including a fireplace and fridge/freezer. Even the cooking utensils were complete, from pots and pans to colander. Of course we brought our own pot and utensils, along with rice, canned sardines and Brahim's.

The next day we went to a nearby farm for strawberry picking. Adam was very excited, and he was good at choosing the strawberry. We ended up with almost 2kg of strawberry. The villagers get their groceries here, fresh from the farm.

tak puas petik strawberry, nak raba2 yg dlm kedainya pulak..

ada nenek minat dgn abid..
